How to Say “NO!” to Standardized Testing 

Mission:  School Transformation is an ongoing effort to empower the transformation of the public schools of Texas.  The system envisioned through this mission is one that fosters innovation, creativity, and a thirst for learning.  It champions new, more meaningful, assessment and accountability measures, replacing the current system built around narrowly focused standardized tests that end up as the “be-all, end-all” yardstick for a school’s – and its student’s – success.


  1. New Learning Standards
  • Reflective of current research in the area of college and career readiness (ACT, SAT, AP, IB, etc.)
  • Reflective of national and competitive international standards
  • Inclusive of the essential core knowledge and processes of each discipline
  • Clear and rigorous yet manageable in number
  • Manageable in number
  • Related within and across grade levels


GISD Contributions:

  • Narrow learning standards through the development and use of the GISD Absolutes for core subjects
  • Focus on depth of understanding versus coverage in classrooms through student engagement, time on task, and research-base instructional strategies

GISD Contributions:

  • Utilize the HB 5 Community Engagement Rating to highlight district accountability in areas beyond standardized testing and to engage stakeholders in the accountability process and school improvement
  • Focus on college and career readiness through the Associate’s Degree Initiative, CATE dual credit and certification and other initiatives
  • Provide community service opportunities for GISD students at all levels
  • Teach and model good citizenship
  • Engage as many students as possible in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities


  1. Digital Learning Environment
  • Designing relevant, rigorous learning tasks that leverage the power of technologies and the Internet
  • Developing facilitation and collaboration strategies
  • Creating classroom systems and routines that support collaborative and independent learning
  • Establishing guidelines for ethical and appropriate use of digital media and content
  • Using various technologies and the Internet in instructional planning and decision-making
  • Using digital technologies in evaluation of learning (assessment, data-driven decision making, portfolios, etc.)
